Ashley and Charlie’s first date wasn’t your typical evening out on the town. The two were set up by common friends for their college’s annual “screw,” an event for which roommates set one another up on blind dates—costumes and uncoordinated dancing are the hallmark of the soiree. “These events rarely end in marriage. But thanks to the design of brilliant friends, when Charlie approached me, wearing a cardboard swan dress reminiscent of his favorite artist, Bjork, it started a friendship and a crush, that would lead to marriage,” Ashley says.
