With the idea for a minimalist wedding with a modern edge, Michelle and Tennyson picked purple as their signature color and set out to plan a summer wedding. The Bride Michelle Chen, 30, product marketing manager The Groom Tennyson Tom, 34, software consultant The Date August 6 After dating for some time, Tennyson planned a weekend getaway to New York City, where he intended to propose over a quiet and intimate dinner. But his unfamiliarity with New York thwarted his close to perfect plan (the restaurant was too crowded and extremely noisy, and the cold weather didn’t help matters). Tennyson, did however, get up the courage to pop the question when the two arrived back to their toasty hotel room, and Michelle happily said “yes!”

A small posy of white dendrobium orchids and a green aspidistra leaf were tied to each pew with lavender ribbon to incorporate the colors of the day. Two tall clear pedestals filled with hanging vines of vibrant purple Aranda orchids were placed in front of the drapery at either side of the ceremony altar.
Michelle carried a teardrop-shaped bouquet of vibrant purple orchids accented with deep purple lisianthus blooms.
Michelle and Tennyson wanted to keep the design of the wedding simple and elegant. As the bride describes it: “minimalism with a modern edge.” Different shades of purple (the brides favorite color), ivory accents, and the clean lines of the Aranda orchids captured the theme perfectly.
The hand-made invitations introduced the color palette for the day. The invite backing was a rich metallic purple, and ivory linen paper was used for the inserts. The front of the invitation featured an image of Aranda orchids designed by Michelle’s sister. The same floral image was carried through all the paper details of the day.
Michelle wore an ivory strapless San Patrick gown with hints of gold beading and embroidery and a long train. She accessorized with pearl and diamond earrings that were a gift from her sister and her cousin.
