A DIY, Vintage Wedding at the Metropolitan Building in New York City
Not too long after they met at work, Kym Smith (30 and a financial software professional) and Jason Gordon (28 and a software developer) started living together. “Pretty quickly we were living in a tiny studio apartment together on top of spending Monday-Friday, 9-5, at desks five feet apart. We loved food, art, New York, and each other’s company (of course),” says Kym. Jason proposed to Kym at the Museum of Modern Art on a trip to practice their sketching skills. When it came time to plan their wedding, Kym and Jason chose the Metropolitan Building in Long Island City, Queens. “For our wedding, we wanted a venue that would allow us to be as creative and crazy as we wanted. The Metropolitan Building was perfect — we could tell as soon as we got inside.” A color palette of pink and gray set a romantic tone for the wedding day. The antique furniture filled space and had a vintage feel. The couple added handmade touches to put their own personality into the decor. “We even hung up a few of my paintings in the venue and asked a close friend to officiate the wedding,” says Kym. Even though the couple planned out every detail, there were still surprises throughout the wedding day that made it feel fun and spontaneous. “Jason surprised everyone (myself included) with ice cream sandwiches from Melt Bakery. And, I hit the chandelier with my bouquet during the toss,” says Kym.
