rnWhen Matthew decided to propose to Alison, he knew he wanted her family close by to celebrate the happy news. Matt had Alison plan a 2nd birthday party for their dog, Barkley, while Alison's Aunt Cathy and family friend Diane were in town for a visit. While the guests were in on the real reason for the party, Alison continued to plan the dog's party. Matt told the guests that the ring would be hidden in one of the presents, but no one knew which one. When Alison began opening Barley’s gifts, everyone looked on with anticipation, cameras at the ready. The last gift held a small black box and as Alison opened it, Matthew got down on one knee in front of everyone and proposed. To find the perfect ring to present to Alison, Matthew included both mothers in the ring shopping process. As a sentimental touch, Matthew’s mother gave Matthew the stone from her engagement ring for him to put in a new setting for Alison.
