A Vintage Bohemian Backyard Wedding in Joplin, Montana

When Mikenna's sister got married a few years back, their mother built a barn on her property to host the festivities. “It just proves how great my mom is at designing and decorating,” Mikenna says. “She really is the mastermind behind it all.” So for Mikenna’s wedding to Chris, much like for her sister’s day, Mom took on the role of planner. The bride modeled her jewel-tone palette around two bridesmaid dresses—a floral print and a green velvet—and the day’s other details evolved from there.
“I have always wanted an outdoor wedding,” Mikenna says. “I feel like it’s more laid-back, and that’s exactly how Chris and I wanted our day to be.”
“I wasn’t sure what I wanted for shoes, but I knew I didn’t want anything ‘normal,’” Mikenna says. “I saw these, and I was sold— they were still white but more my style.” That style vibe echoed the day’s overall vintage-boho look.
For their late-September event, Chris dressed in navy with a burgundy suit jacket, while Mikenna rocked a breezy lace and chion gown—topped with a floral hair accessory made of dahlias, roses and celosia and, later, a leather jacket. “It was really special to get married in a place where I have so many memories growing up,” Mikenna says.
“I wasn’t allowed into the barn until the day of the wedding,” Mikenna says on the reception, “but I trusted my mom and knew it would be perfect.” A rustic table and a combination of upholstered and industrial bistro chairs set the head table apart. Its crowning feature, a floral lighting installation, was made from vintage lamp parts and covered in greenery dotted with red and blush blooms.
Celebrating outdoors, “lights were a must” for Mikenna, so classic twinkle lights were strung above the dance floor, and a collection of coordinating pendant lights hung in the trees. Mikenna’s mother also sourced the lounge furniture, vintage glassware and old tins for centerpieces.
For dessert, Mikenna “Wanted a bunch of different cakes with different flavors.” The delicious display included white, red velvet, chocolate, pumpkin and gluten-free treats.
