This Couple Leveled Up Their Love with an Arcade-Themed Wedding in Laguna Beach, California
Sydnee Goodman (24 and a host and producer) and Alex Rubens (24 and a business partnerships manager and author) are Los Angeles residents and avid gamers. Sydnee and Alex married on June 2, 2018, at The Ranch at Laguna Beach and threw a reception with video games.
“I was determined to make the wedding as much about us as possible, and we met through our passion for games,” Sydnee says. Though they originally wanted something neutral, “we’re pretty colorful people,” she says. Sydnee surprised Alex with the custom Space Invaders–themed escort card display.
Alex asked Sydnee to marry him at EightyTwo, the barcade where the pair went on their first date.
Sydnee and Alex chose to say handwritten vows privately before the ceremony. “It really lightened the mood for the actual ceremony,” Alex says.
Outside, bright blue velvet linens, ghost chairs and a black-and-white dance floor added graphic elements to the patio. Inside, the couple’s mini-arcade worked double duty as both a player vs. player battleground and a welcome plan B. “We made sure to choose games that were close to us, but it also ended up being a great alternative for people who didn’t want to dance,” Sydnee says. The gamers chose the entertainment, including NBA Jam and Area 51, his and her favorites respectively.
“We wanted to combine our personal aesthetics: mine more over-the-top and eccentric, and Alex’s more minimal,” Sydnee says. Bright pink and yellow channeled that colorful boldness.
