After meeting and dating in San Francisco and spending the ski season at Lake Tahoe, Sunny Durack and Reynolds Maxwell took off to the California coast for a break in March. Sunny's expectations of a low-key expedition took a turn for the romantic when Reynolds pulled into Manka's Inverness Lodge, a renowned coastal destination. The Bride Sonya (Sunny) Durack The Groom Reynolds Maxwell The Date May 17 Sunny's suspicions continued to grow into the night (Reynolds was definitely laying on the special treatment, Sunny reports), until the couple found themselves in front of a crackling fire. As Reynolds told Sunny how much she meant to him, the logs in the fire suddenly shifted, sending out a shower of sparks. It was then that Reynolds got down on his knee and proposed. After their romantic trip and renewed commitment, Sunny moved back to North Carolina, her home state, and began planning their wedding on Bald Head Island. Fourteen months later, 115 guests joined them for the celebration.

The reception was nearby at the Harbour Pavilion, a brick-floored structure with picturesque views of the marina and marsh. While a 6-piece band performed at one end, food and cocktails -- including grilled scallops, seared tuna, shrimp cocktail, and Australian wines in honor of Sunny's heritage -- were enjoyed at the other.
Because Sunny didn't wear something borrowed or blue from her mother, she decided to have the wedding cake designed after the lace from her mom's wedding dress. The cake designer hand-piped the design of the lace into the white buttercream icing. It turned out beautifully, and my parents were honored to have this as a tribute to their wedding day, remembers Sunny.
