Shawna & Jeff in Belton, KS
When Shawna Dutoit married Jeffrey Levy, the bride's father and brother took the stage at the wedding reception and together told a story they called The Legend of the Jayhawk. Dad said that he had heard that the Jayhawk sometimes appeared at a party, as long as a few requirements were meant: Some KU alumni were necessary. (At this, the guests, many of them KU grads, including the bride and groom, cheered.) He said that a KU hat was necessary, and Shauna's brother just happened to have one. And then he said that the KU fight song had to be playing. The Bride Shawna Dutoit, a French teacher The Groom Jeffrey Levy, a promotional advertising exec The Date September 8 Suddenly a recording of that very tune began to play, and the KU Jayhawk strutted in as the guests laughed and cheered. The bride (who was a cheerleader in college) performed a cheer with him, and the couple posed for photos before the bird made his exit. It was a playful surprise in an otherwise traditional wedding day, and a fitting moment for an event that had been set in motion almost one year earlier, with a different surprise. Jeff, who attended KU on a golf scholarship, had spent the summer teaching Shawna to play a decent game of golf. One chilly fall day, he coaxed a very reluctant Shawna onto the golf course, ostensibly so that he could videotape her swing with a borrowed camera set up on a tripod. But once they were in front of the camera, Jeff began to describe the relationship between golf and love. Slowly, it dawned on Shawna what was going on, and then Jeff got down on one knee.
