When Stephen popped the question, he plotted with Erica’s mother to plan the perfect surprise engagement in Erica’s hometown—across the country, in California. “The proposal itself was in Edgewood Park, near her house. The first time she took me to see her hometown, we took a walk through the park and stopped at the top,” Stephen says. “It has a gorgeous view of Palo Alto and Silicon Valley. I took a rock and cheesily inscribed our initials inside a heart on a nearby tree. Needless to say, that’s where it happened.” Despite an unexpected trip to the hospital to get his appendix removed close to the proposal date, Stephen’s plan went off without a hitch.
