One Couple's Vintage-Meets-Boho Military Wedding at Green Gardens Farms in Battle Creek, Michigan

Mckayla and Jordan planned a boho-inspired wedding at Green Garden Farms in Battle Creek, Michigan, that began with a ceremony in a field and ended with a romantic reception in a greenhouse. At every step of the way, the couple's wedding was packed with personalization—from nods to Jordan's military service to the festive bridal crocs Mckayla wore while getting ready and the unique telephone audio guestbook the duo included in their reception.

"To be honest, our wedding completely stemmed from my husband’s decision to wear his Army Dress Blues," explains Mckayla. "He joined the military when he was 17, so it’s been a very large part of his adult life. The Army Dress Blue Uniform is made up of royal blue slacks with a gold stripe down each side, a crisp white dress shirt with applets on the shoulders, a bow tie and a navy blue jacket with his rank, ribbons and awards displayed. The uniform is gorgeous, but there’s a lot going on with all of the ribbons, the medals, the pins, etc. Once he decided to wear it, I knew I had to find a color scheme that complemented the blue and gold of his uniform. We chose a midnight blue tuxedo for the groomsmen, the fathers and ushers. I gave our bridesmaids a choice of 3 dresses to complement the navy color palate of the guys and unanimously they all chose a gold velvet, floor length wrap dress."

Attire was such a central part of the couple's wedding that Mckayla actually recalls the first look as her favorite moment from the day because she finally got to show off her ensemble to Jordan. "By far, the most anticipated part of our wedding day was the first look. I was so excited for him to finally see me in my dress and he was so eager to see it as well," she notes. "When I first picked it out, I immediately wanted to show him what it looked like, because I was so excited about it. Jordan however, was adamant that he wanted it to be a surprise. So we had been waiting for that moment for almost a year."

After settling on the color and fashion choices for the wedding, Mckayla leaned into planning decor that would complement both her chosen color palette and the rustic greenhouse venue. "I am an old soul and a love of all things vintage. My first job ever was as a server at a banquet facility so I primarily worked wedding receptions. I have seen it all when it comes to wedding decor, so I knew I wanted something unique, eclectic and vintage. I spent over two years collecting mismatched china, crystal drinking glasses and crystal candlestick holders. I managed to get my hands on gold velvet table runners that perfectly matched our bridesmaid dresses and completed our tablescape with gold mirrored trays that I found at a home decor store."
