One Couple's Ethiopian-and-Jewish Fusion Wedding at Detroit Institute of Arts in Michigan
Lizzy and Tigist share a passion for equality and justice. “We wanted the words we said and our ceremony to reflect that,” Lizzy says. The couple took part in a traditional Jewish ceremony, signing a ketubah and saying their vows under a chuppah, but switched things up to make sure both of them felt seen on their day. Not only did Lizzy and Tigist enter at the same time using two aisles, but they also drank outof a Kiddush cup brought from Ethiopia and ate slices of cake designed with a traditional Ethiopian weaving pattern. The couple decorated the traditional Jewish wedding arch with branches, calla lilies and orchids, and also hung Lizzy’s mom’s lace wedding veil from the structure. When it came to décor, Lizzy and Tigist let the museum lead the way. “We were inspired by the museum, which matched who we are as people,” Tigist says. “It was artistic, modern and bright.” In that spirit, tall centerpieces with branches, orchids and lilies finished the minimal black tables. The newlyweds followed their customary hora with a modern dance-o to the tune of “Turn Down for What” by DJ Snake and Lil Jon.
