Even though Olivia doesn’t remember the first time she met Rich freshman year of college (he says it wasn’t that memorable anyway), the second she saw him backstage at a school play they were both working on, she knew she had to date him. After a summer touring with a children’s theater production together, the pair fell in love and quickly transitioned their friendship into a romance. After Rich gave Olivia Stargirl, a high-school love story by Jerry Spinelli, Olivia gave him the sequel, Love, Stargirl during their senior year of college. Just before Christmas, Rich sent back the book with the last few pages covered up, and instructed her to read to that point before he arrived for a visit on December 29. During his visit, Rich took Olivia to an oceanfront restaurant and the two took turns reading the ending over dinner. As Olivia read the last paragraph of the book, which was a love letter, she looked up to see Rich on one knee. Everyone in the restaurant cheered as Olivia said yes through tears of happiness.
