Magical Multicultural Hindu Wedding at Sands Point

Resident physicians Farnoosh Mahdavi (31) and Yaagnik Kosuri (30) turned their wedding into a weekend of different celebrations, each full of tradition. "Though we both tend to have classic taste, our wedding was a mix of cultures," Farnoosh says. "We decided on two ceremonies, each done in its own way." The couple started with a Hindu ceremony in honor of Yaagnik's roots, filling the Village Club of Sands Point with red décor and jasmine. The next day, the pair tied the knot in a Persian sofreh at Wave Hill, followed by a party with a mix of Persian, Indian, and Western tunes and plenty of dancing.
At their Hindu ceremony, the couple took the seven vows of marriage beneath a wrought iron mandap.
For day two of their wedding weekend, Farnoosh and Yaagnik headed to a Persian ceremony at Wave Hill. The pair's traditional sofreh, a spread of items symbolizing the keys to a happy marriage, overlooked the Hudson River. Farnoosh dressed in a South Indian sari for the Hindu celebration, then changed into an A-line ivory gown and veil for the second day's events. Yaagnik traded his beige sherwani for a navy tuxedo and bow tie.
"Our aesthetic senses tend to be classic," Farnoosh says. "We wanted to be both playful and elegant." Case in point: Arrangements of colorful, extra-large peonies framed gold calligraphed table numbers. Ever the New Yorkers, Farnoosh and Yaagnik cut into an assortment of cakes from a New York City staple: Billy's Bakery. Just in case partygoers needed even more desserts to satisfy their sweet tooth, the pair offered guests treats from a candy bar.
