The Bride Katie Borenitschm, 24, registered nurse The Groom Jon Wieringa, 26, optometrist The Date August 20 When Katie adopted a stray dog she named Jasmine, she ended up with not just one but two best friends. Jon used the good-looking pooch as an excuse to strike up a conversation with Katie at a mutual pal’s barbecue. As biology majors at Central Michigan University, Katie and Jon frequently sat next to each other in classes, “and every once in a while we would touch arms, neither of us making much of an effort to retract from the armrest,” Katie notes. Late nights “studying” at the library, listening to music, and long talks led to a deeper bond. After three years of dating, Jon made a top-secret trip to a jeweler’s in Detroit. On his return, he went straight to Katie’s house and called to her from the dining room: “Hey Katie, did you see what your dog did?” Maybe it’s not a line every dog owner relishes hearing, but in this case, it was the perfect decoy. Jon positioned the ring near Jasmine, and asked the big question.

Our cake was so fun! I found a picture in a magazine that I liked and our baker recreated it perfectly, Katie says. The three-tier cake echoed the modern, square motifs of the wedding with different designs on each tier: green stripes, raspberry flowers, and orange dots.
“The dresses were gorgeous!” Katie exclaims. Her seven bridesmaids wore apple green, mermaid-silhouette gowns from Vera Wang in layered silk and tulle with spaghetti straps and a small train.
