Derryl could always make Melissa laugh. They met when he first became Melissa’s account rep for a restaurant she used to manage. The two became friends and stayed that way for seven years. It wasn’t until Derryl got a job in Chicago that they realized they wanted to be more than just friends. They dated long-distance for a while until Derryl moved back to Toledo. The Bride Melissa McGowan, 40, account executive The Groom Derryl Glaze, 43, senior manager The Date May 16 Two months later, he popped the question while they were vacationing in Mexico. The couple were on a walk when a mariachi band started to serenade them. Just then, people from their resort appeared with cameras, and Derryl proposed. Melissa and Derryl decided to rent the Toledo Museum of Art and use a color scheme of truffle brown, burgundy, and deep pink to create the romantic atmosphere they were after.

Melissa’s bouquet was made of burgundy cymbidium orchids, rich pink and white calla lilies, white tulips, and white ranunculus. The stems were wrapped with an ivory ribbon and accented with her grandmother’s pin for a personalized touch.
The round tables were topped with low, square vases and filled with burgundy cymbidium orchids and deep-purple lilacs. Melissa and her bridesmaids used their bouquets to decorate the head table.
After falling in love with a cake featured on The Knot Best of Weddings magazine cover, Melissa enlisted her cake baker to re-create the design in her wedding hues. The buttercream cake was topped off with fresh flowers.
Instead of a sit-down dinner, the couple’s caterer served a “strolling dinner” to encourage socializing. On the menu were mouthwatering options like seared yellowfin tuna on chilled Asian noodles and smoked shrimp on white cheddar grits.
