"Downton Abbey" Inspired This Wedding at The Oakside Mansion in Bloomfield, New Jersey

After James proposed to Caitlin with a 1920s art deco engagement ring, the pair got started planning their take on a Roaring Twenties rendezvous. “Think more ‘Downton Abbey with modern touches’ rather than ‘Great Gatsby,’” Caitlin says. “I started with calla lilies and peacock feathers, which are both commonly seen in 1920s décor, then bought most of our vases and décor on Etsy,” Caitlin says. The two even scored with the venue, a 20th-century estate complete with original wedding photos of couples who once lived there.

“I describe my gown as Zelda Fitzgerald meets Stevie Nicks,” Caitlin says. Her art deco look included an antique veil, a 1920s hair comb, plus emerald statement earrings and shoes. For the reception, she changed into a flapper-style dress with fringe and an emerald headpiece. The couple’s niece rocked a peacock feather hairpiece and brocade booties, and their four nephews wore check britches, newsboy caps and mismatched suspenders.

After Caitlin and James made it official in the gardens, everyone headed to the porch for a 1920s jazz-accompanied cocktail hour, which spilled onto the home’s first floor and into the solarium.

Instead of gifting favors, the pair invited each guest to place a marble in one of four gold swan planters, each one representing a different charity. They made a donation post-wedding—$1 for every marble.
