One Couple's DIY Boho-Chic Fall Wedding in Washington, DC

Molly and Ethan turned their wedding dream into a reality in just four months, and they illustrated that feat with celestial notes. For example, guests walked down to the ceremony through a line of trees covered with hanging macramé dream catchers and gold mirrors hand-lettered with bible verses. “More than anything, I wanted the beauty of the entire day to be felt through the covenant we were making to each other and to God.” Molly says. To maintain that sentiment, the two went with a subdued color palette that blended right in with the natural surroundings. They used fall’s peak seasonal shades, such as mustard yellow and burnt orange, alongside unfussy thrifted items, like vintage rugs, which marked the aisle and dance floor. Molly calls the overall effect “woodsy boho.”
The pair’s adorable gaggle of ring bearers and flower girls were all “like family” to them, Molly explains, though, technically, only one attendant is related. Rather than having a garter removal or bouquet toss, Molly and Ethan took center stage to smash a piñata.
Molly wore a leather jacket for the reception that she scored from Goodwill and customized herself with paint.
Greenery, amber glass bottles and glassware with tealight candles sat grouped on a wicker placemat. Thrifted gold frames held photos of Molly and Ethan and displayed table numbers. Guests left with Fisher’s caramel popcorn, out of Ocean City, Maryland, as favors. For dessert, newlyweds sliced into this small cutting cake but served guests a variety of Smith Island cakes in flavors from pumpkin cheesecake to strawberry shortcake.
The newlyweds hit the floor to “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by Sleeping At Last, then a playlist that included acoustic folk songs took over the party. “I’m a huge coffee drinker, and it was a no-brainer to have it at a fall wedding,” Molly says. They set up urns on the venue’s old picnic table for partygoers to serve themselves and borrowed a room divider from a friend, hanging mismatched coffee mugs on it using S-hooks. Greenery and lights were the finishing touch.
