Soon after Gregory moved to Chicago from Boston, his friend set him up on a blind date with Deepa. They met for drinks at Fulton Lounge, and sparks flew. A little more than a year later, Deepa and Greg were set to leave on a trip to Brazil and Argentina, where Deepa thought Greg might propose. When Deepa opened the front door, she saw that the house was dark except for candlelight. Greg had prepared a five-course meal, which they ate by the fireplace. Afterward, he asked Deepa to marry him. Following their trip, the couple spent their eight-month engagement planning a wedding that merged Indian wedding traditions with Western ones. They debated between a Chicago wedding and a destination one in Nevada or Arizona, but went the local route so they could get more involved in the process. For both of their families, Chicago was a destination locale, anyway.
