In a twist on tradition, Carla and David juxtaposed the old 19th century, Southern feel of Castle McCulloch with modern touches like contemporary floral arrangements and colorful linens. THE BRIDE Carla Ligon THE GROOM David Miller THE DATE September 5 January 17, 2003, dawned cold and snowy in Washington, D.C. “I woke up thinking it would be just another Friday at The Washington Post,” says Carla, 27, an advertising executive at the Post. But her fiance, David, 25, an economist with the IRS, had something else in mind: a romantic rose-petal proposal in the historic lobby of her workplace, complete with an audience that included the newspaper’s chairman, publisher, president, and many of Carla’s coworkers, who were in on the plan. “I barely managed to get out a ‘yes,’ which only David could hear,” remembers Carla. “The crowd of about 30 people, having waited patiently until that point, erupted into applause as we kissed.”
