Brandie and Joe met through mutual friends during their freshman year of college at the University of South Dakota. It wasn't until their junior year, however, that they went from just saying “hi” in passing to spending time alone together. The couple stopped walking to climb an outcropping of rocks in the lake, and it was there that Joe asked Brandie to marry him. Soon after, the couple began planning a rustic, outdoor wedding to take place right next to Sylvan Lake.
