Love didn't strike right away, but soon the number of commuters dwindled down to just the two of them. It gave us plenty of bonding time, says Annie. On a group venture to the movies, everyone else bowed out, leaving Annie and Calvin to their own devices. They spent the evening talking over ice cream at Ben & Jerry's, and love bloomed. Fast-forward 10 months later. While in her Virginia hometown at a friend's wedding, Annie got a phone call from her parents: Calvin was at their restaurant. I was wondering why he was in town, but I didn't think much of it, she says. That evening she picked him up and headed for her parents' house. Calvin had planned on setting the scene with a trail of candles leading up the driveway, but they'd barely reached the living room and greeted Annie's grandmother before -- ring burning a hole in his pocket --he dropped to one knee and proposed.

Annie and Calvin married in the historic First United Methodist Church, which was aglow with candles. Happily for the couple, Calvin's family overcame visa difficulties and joined the celebration. As a result, Annie wore a veil designed and hand-stitched by Calvin and his mother.

Traditional western vows were exchanged, with a friend offering a blessing at the end of the ceremony. After a round of photos, the bridal party trekked into downtown Ann Arbor for a visit to the site of Calvin and Annie's first date. Ben & Jerry's sweet tooth sated, they headed to the University of Michigan's Nichols Arboretum for additional photos.
