An Organic Art Deco Wedding at Holman Ranch in Carmel Valley, California

"The art deco theme was really inspired by my sister, whose background is in art history," Cynthia Kelly says of her wedding to Nick Odlum. "My mom is also a huge art history buff and has a beautiful collection of art deco prints and design elements in her home. I love the geometric patterns, fabrics and material combinations from that era." The vibe first came to life with the gray and white stationery suite, which featured graphic depictions of oak trees, volcanoes and owls (a nod to the bride's college mascot and the groom's family crest). It also showed up in the lounge furniture, sweetheart chairs and gold flatware. Since they got married on a ranch, Cynthia and Nick included some rustic elements as well, from the wood signage to Cynthia's cowboy boots. "I knew from the beginning that I wanted to wear boots or booties since we were planning a winter wedding on a ranch. These cowboy boots are elegant, full of character and give a nod to my California/Texas roots, so they really felt like the perfect fit for me." The ceremony took place on a patio overlooking the mountains, cocktail hour was on the ranch's lawn and the reception was in a clear tent. Cynthia and Nick decorated with gardenias (Cynthia's mom's favorite flower) and included green velvet (to honor Nick's late mother, who had her bridesmaids wear the fabric at her own wedding). The stunning wedding cake had a green geode design that also tied into the color palette.
Our favorite #MakeTradition Moment: Since they both work as geophysicists, Cynthia and Nick added volcanic elements to their wedding. "I absolutely love obsidian (real volcanic glass) and knew early on that I wanted to use it as a unique personal detail for the place cards," Cynthia says. "When we were working on the table layout, we also thought it’d be really fun to use volcano names in lieu of table numbers."
