Rebekah Shennan, 35, a vice president, and Josh Michael, 36, a lab technician, met on Match.com and instantly had the feeling that there was something special there. After a year and a half of dating, Josh proposed at Rebekah’s family’s mountain home during a ski trip. For their wedding, the couple wanted something a little different that would really speak to their own personalities as well as their relationship. They started by choosing a totally unexpected venue to host both their ceremony and reception, The Orange Peel in downtown Asheville, an iconic concert venue and theater. “I originally looked at a lot of farms in the area,” says Rebekah, “but I felt like everyone gets married at farms. Plus, everything I looked at was very limiting in what vendors we could use.” The Orange Peel not only provided the couple with a unique backdrop for their lively affair, almost all of the rentals (tables, chairs, linens, lighting, sound, security, bartenders, etc.) were included, which made the planning process much easier and the quirky space required little decoration. For their color palette, the couple looked to their alma maters, Clemson University and Western Carolina University, both of which have purple as their school colors. Wanting to keep things as local as possible, Rebekah and Josh sourced their flowers from Your Vase or Mine, who picked the flowers right in Asheville on the day of the wedding and were then arranged by Josh’s mother and two of Rebekah’s mother’s friends. Lots of fun, interactive touches were incorporated into the day, including a drum circle, guitar guestbook, mascots and musical performances by the groom.

Rebekah chose a curved diamond eternity wedding ring to complement her two toned diamond engagement ring, which also featured a diamond band.
For their wedding, Rebekah and Josh decided to think outside of the box when it came time to choose their venue. "Initially, I looked at a lot of farms in the area, but I felt like everyone gets married at farms," says Rebekah. "We ended up choosing The Orange Peel, an iconic music venue in downtown Asheville to host both our ceremony and reception. We loved the unique location and there were lots of perks — the venue required little decoration and almost everything we needed was included!"
Rebekah and Josh chose their color palette based on their colleges' school colors, both of which happened to be purple. For her bouquet, Rebekah chose a mix of bright purple wildflowers, lots of greenery and few pops of orange.
All of the wedding's flowers were locally sourced. The flowers were fresh picked the day of the wedding and then arranged into bouquets, boutonnieres and centerpieces by Rebekah and her family.
Josh adorned his lapel with a fresh mix of locally grown wildflowers in bright shades of yellow and purple.
Rebekah and Josh took full advantage of their unique venue, exchanging vows on stage, where their family and friends could see the proceedings with ease.
Josh, who loves music, surprised Rebekah with an impromptu performance of Elvis's "Can't Help Falling in Love" (complete with an Elvis costume) and U2's "All I Want is You."
Rebekah and Josh surprised their guests with a drum circle during the reception. "Every Friday night in Pritchard Park people from every walk of life gather for an impromptu drum circle," says Rebekah. "The owner of Skinny Beats Drum Shop in Asheville dropped by to lead ours, getting all the guests in on the fun."
Instead of a traditional guest book, guests signed an acoustic guitar, a nod to Josh's love of music, which the couple would be able to enjoy for years after the wedding.
Besides their color palette, the couple gave another nod to Rebekah's alma mater, Clemson, with a custom cake topper that featured a tiger bride.
