An Elegant, Geek-Chic Wedding at Hotel Del Coronado in Coronado, California
Jane Barrow and Steven Irvine struck the perfect blend of modern elegance and geek chic for their fun-filled spring wedding in Coronado, California. “We’re both huge nerds, so the challenge was to incorporate as much geekiness into the wedding while keeping it beautiful,” Jane says. To help pull off their vision, the pair tapped their stationer, Whimsique, who created laser-cut wood centerpieces featuring symbols from the couple’s favorite franchises (think: Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and Star Trek) in addition to striking circular menu cards in eye-catching shades of green and gold that revealed each course through a small laser-cut window. “They were abstract but really pretty, and guests had fun trying to figure out all of the symbols,” Jane adds. The menu and the music even got in on the evening’s funky theme: The Starfleet Insignia served as the cake topper, chocolates in the shape of Star Wars characters were gifted to guests as favors and the ’80s covered band that rocked the house after dinner donned Star Trek uniforms—a playful touch that made the crowd go wild. Another standout element that captured the evening’s vibe was a hexagonal ceremony arch draped in white blooms and lush green ferns that framed the couple as they exchanged vows. Bundles of fresh greenery, gilded accents and taper candles propped up in brass holders put a refined finish on the décor. “We had some florals, but mostly we used cool greenery in the design elements. Florals were more of a backdrop to highlight the other cool pieces that we had made,” Jane says.
