An Elegant, Classic Wedding at Castell de Sant Marçal in Barcelona, Spain

Lauren Campbell and Joan Fuste Marinel-lo whisked their family and friends off to Barcelona, Spain, for an elegant wedding with hints of international flair. The ceremony, which was conducted in two different languages, took place at the iconic Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar, a dramatic Catalan Gothic stone church built in the 14th century. “Because it is such a treasured monument, it is not closed to the public during weddings and other celebrations,” Lauren says. “We ended up having an additional 250 attendees from the public walk in minutes before my walk down the aisle.” After the “I dos,” the newlyweds and their guests headed outside the city to the historic Castell de Sant Marçal for the reception. Garlands of eucalyptus and a color palette of ivory, gold and light earthy tones played up the venue’s old-world vibe and natural surroundings. To give guests a taste of the local flavor, Lauren and Joan had four different stations serving up regional specialities such as jamón and paella. Both big fans of opera, the pair surprised everyone with a live performance after dinner. “We snuck the singers in while everyone was still eating. As guests started to mingle, the singers started off the dancing,” Lauren says. As a nod to Lauren’s American roots, hamburgers, hot dogs and doughnuts were served as late-night snacks.
