An Art Deco-Inspired Wedding at the Calhoun Beach Club in Minneapolis, Minnesota

While Nicole Nelson (26 and a career counselor) and Mike Rominski (25 and a filmmaker) were set up their mutual friends, it took a while for them to actually meet. But once they did, they were practically inseparable. A year after they started dating, Mike proposed on a dock on the St. Croix River with a ring the couple had designed together. The couple planned a swinging Gatsby style bash that was nothing short on glamour. They chose the Calhoun Beach Club to host the event, its river views and impressive vintage decor fitting in perfectly with their vision. A color palette of mint green and gold had a distinct old world flair, while Art Deco stationery, over-the-top feathery centerpieces and candelabras dripping in pearls played up the wedding’s 1920s vibe. Old microphones and cameras added unique touch to the tabletops, paying tribute to Nicole and Mike’s love of film and storytelling. Cocktail hour was held out on the terrace facing Lake Calhoun with a band playing upbeat tunes in the background. Mini tacos and margaritas whetted guests appetites before heading indoors for the reception — complete with a photo booth stocked with “Harry Potter” and “Breaking Bad” props, plus performances all night long by George Fabor and the Icons. Rhubarb chocolates made with rhubarb from Mike’s father’s garden and a handcrafted wooden platter guest book, also made by Mike’s father, were additional special touches that gave the affair personality. “One of the most special parts of our wedding was that Mike made our wedding video himself,” says Nicole. “His business partner and a friend, filmed us all day and then Mike edited the footage.”
