A Traditional, Southern Wedding at Walterboro National Guard Armory in Walterboro, South Carolina
Michelle Hazel (32 and a tourism director) and Kyle Strickland (29 and a sergeant at a sheriff's office) are both from Walterboro, SC but never actually met until they both returned to their hometown as adults. They met at a community event and later connected through Facebook. Kyle immediately asked Michelle on a date for the next week. Six months later, Kyle took Michelle to the Old Sheldon Church Ruins in Yemassee, SC where her grandparents previously got engaged and where Michelle thought they were meeting friends. While there, a woman was taking pictures and asked to take pictures of Michelle and Kyle. Unbeknownst to Michelle, Kyle had planned for the woman to be there. Suddenly, Kyle got down on one knee with the photographer capturing the entire moment. Michelle and Kyle waned to get married in their hometown where they had met and, with Michelle's strong Catholic roots, decided to get married in a Catholic church in Walterboro, SC. They wanted their reception venue to be spacious so they decided on the Walterboro National Guard Armory. "It was a daytime wedding so I wanted something soft, romantic and spring-like," Michelle says. Their color palette was blush, pink and white. Michelle and Kyle are both proud of their hometown, Walterboro, and wanted to incorporate it into their day as much as possible. Michelle created a lot of decor with Walterboro's town slogan in mind, "Walterboro Rocks: The Front Porch of the Lowcountry." Adding to that, she used the town's icon of a rocking chair in a lot of the designs. With the soft colors and the front porch theme, Michelle and Ryan's wedding personified the southern, small town charm they were striving for.
