A Traditional Sikh Destination Wedding at Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa in Puerto Morelos, Mexico

Bonnie Sekhon (28 and a makeup artist) and Ramnik Brah (29 and a home inspector) crossed paths the year before they started dating, when Ramnik passed Bonnie a napkin with his phone number written in lipstick. They met again by fluke at his birthday party; turns out, Bonnie was the best gift. Six years of later, Ramnik planned a romantic secluded dinner on the beach for Bonnie’s birthday where he surprised her with a proposal and a $2 ring from the town. Upon returning home, the couple designed a custom white gold emerald cut ring. The couple had a traditional Sikh wedding at the Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa in Puerto Morelos. “Traditionally Sikh weddings are held indoors in the temple. We wanted to do something different but still have our roots in place,” says Bonnie. For the ceremony, the bride wore an Indian 'lehenga' and the groom wore a 'sherwani.' The couple’s fashion shifted from Bollywood-inspired to old Hollywood elegance for the reception. Bonnie wore a lavish custom crystal gown with a train, and Ramnik wore a sharp Tiger of Sweden gray suit. The beachside reception included both a mariachi band and a DJ to combine local culture with modern flair. Bonnie and Ramnik’s Indian Sikh wedding on the beach in Puerto Morelos was a marriage of the couple’s rich traditions and modern styles, all beautifully captured by Matt Kennedy.

Ramnik wore a Sherwani, which is a heavily embroidered long silk tunic with cotton pants. He also wore a turban, which is traditional in the Sikh culture for men to wear on their wedding day.

Bonnie wore a traditional red and white Indian 'lehenga' with a twist. She raised her 'lehenga' bottom above her ankles to make her double stacked ankle bracelets visible and so her feet could touch the water and sand.
Bonnie wore a retro Bollywood-inspired necklace and earrings. She also wore traditional bridal mehndi.
The flower girls wore traditional white and gold Indian suits and spread flat seashells with red rose petals. Bonnie’s brothers wore white and gold traditional kurta pajamas, or long silk tunics and cotton pants.
Traditional Sikh Wedding Groom Sherwani
The traditional Sikh ceremony color palette was red, antique gold and white.
The couple kept the reception color palette white and gray with a pop of color in the lime green rose ball centerpieces and candles.

For Indian weddings, guests sit on the floor, so the couple used white sheets on the sand covered in bright pillows to keep their guests comfortable.
