Emilie Metzmeier (23 and a student) and Jan Wandel (24 and a student) met in Germany five years before they tied the knot. After two years of doing long distance, Emilie went on an exchange to Germany and it was there that Jan proposed, taking her to a castle in Hohenaspberg. For their wedding, the couple headed to Emilie's hometown of Terrace, British Columbia. The backyard of a close friend seemed like the perfect location for the couple to exchange vows, the expansive property surrounded by lush trees and mountain views. A rustic aesthetic was chosen for the day, with details like haystack pews, logs, mason jars and burlap incorporated throughout. For the reception, the couple added a vintage twist to the decor, introducing antique props and lace to everything from the table tops to the decorative displays.

Emilie got her dress while on exchange in Germany. "It was actually the very first bridal shop and dress that I tried!" says Emilie. "The dress was a one-of-a-kind Sposa Toscana purchased at Hochzeits Haus in Ludwigsburg, Germany. The gown was a fitted mermaid style and covered in lace."
Emilie carried a bouquet with bright yellow sunflowers and baby's breath down the aisle. A burlap bouquet wrap gave the arrangement an added rustic note.
While Jan went classic with his gray suit, he allowed his groomsmen to don a more casual style. Each one wore light gray trousers, white button-down shirts, navy suspenders and gray bow ties.
The boutonnieres were kept on the simple side, with small bunches of baby's breath tied with twine. For a hint of color, a few yellow flowers were added to the mix.
Emilie let her bridesmaids choose their own dresses for the wedding, each in a soft cream-colored hue and lace fabric.
"We were married in a beautiful backyard in my hometown of Terrace, BC. Our friend's backyard has beautiful gardens and is surrounded by lovely trees, with quaint touches that caught my eye," says Emilie.
To give the ceremony a rustic feel, haystacks were used as the ceremony pews and the aisles were lined with mason jar floral arrangements placed on top of logs.
