A Rustic Summer Wedding at Stockroom 230 in Raleigh, North Carolina
After meeting through Match.com and going on a few dates, Catherine Nicolson, 30, a social business manager at IBM, and Steven Smith, 35, a training rep at Glocal Knowledge Training, decided it was best to just be friends. They became best friends and five years later finally decided to give things another go. On a trip to visit his hometown of Antioch, IL, Steven decided to propose. After his original plan to pop the question on the front steps of his childhood home fell through, Steven took Catherine to the town’s old sawmill and against a historic backdrop, asked Catherine to marry him, presenting her with his mother’s engagement ring. For their wedding, the couple wanted to keep things simple, forgoing a theme and allowing the décor and feel of the day to develop organically through the planning process. They kicked the day off with an early ceremony at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Raleigh, the church Catherine grew up attending, followed by an afternoon reception. Bright blue hydrangeas and vibrant yellow sunflowers highlighted the summer season and brought a cheerful pop of color to the outdoor reception. The couple, who are big fans of craft beer, featured some of their favorite local brews, including Lonerider Brewing Company's (Raleigh) Sweet Josie Brown and Highland Brewing Company's (Asheville) St. Terese Pale Ale. In addition to the craft beer, Steve and his groomsmen even wore boutonnieres made with hops. Following the reception, Catherine and Steven whisked their guests away to an after party at Crank Arm Brewery. The Crank Arm Brewery, which started out as a rickshaw company, picked up the newlyweds and their wedding party at the reception and pedaled them through downtown Raleigh on their way to brewery.
