A Rustic, Romantic Wedding at Acquaviva Winery in Maple Park, Illinois

There’s no way Katie Mulder (23 and a salon owner) and Ben Holwerda (23 and works for an auto-body shop) would let a little rain—or a torrential downpour—put a damper on their wedding day. The couple got married at Acquaviva Winery in Maple Park, Illinois. "We fell in love with the venue, and it was the first one we looked at,” Katie says. With the lush vineyards behind them accented by wooden wine barrels and whimsical white flower arrangements by Forget Me Not Flowers, the outdoor ceremony was the picture of rustic romance. As a nod to their venue, the couple included wine details throughout their day, from a wine-pouring unity ceremony to wine-bottle table numbers at their reception. A few unexpected guests turned up at the wedding: giant rain clouds. According to Angela Shae Photography: “Minutes after the couple was pronounced husband and wife, the area was hit by a huge storm. Most guests made it undercover safety, but it sure made for great stories and dramatic photos." Luckily, the reception took place indoors in a warm, intimate setting illuminated by candles. The couple selected a personal choice for their first-dance song: “Fool For You” by the John Butler Trio was playing the first time they kissed, so it was a natural choice.
