A Rustic, Outdoor Wedding at the Fernwood Botanical Gardens in Niles, Michigan

Heidi (25 and a worker for a non-profit) and Sam (26 and manager for Arts at the Acorn Theater) quickly bonded over their love for music while sitting next to one another in their sixth grade math class (even though they didn't decide to escalate their relationship until their senior year of high school!). After a year apart while attending separate colleges, Heidi transferred to Indiana University where her and Sam continued their life-long relationship. After college, the couple ventured to Washington where Sam proposed to Heidi while living in their first home together in October 2012. After a date night with dinner and miniature golf, Heidi arrived home to find that her and Sam's dog had a new collar with a tag that read, "Marry us?" When Heidi looked to Sam, he was on one knee with the ring waiting for Heidi's answer. After a two year engagement, the couple got married at the Fernwood Botanical Gardens in Niles, MI where the couple could combine their love for nature and for each other in an outdoor wedding ceremony. "Our wedding theme was 'Retro Eclectic' with a touch of rustic," Heidi explains. Heidi and Sam played major roles in planning their wedding day with Heidi putting together all the flower arrangements made up of yellows and orange with accents of red, pink, purple and white. The couple also chose their own music playlists for the ceremony and the reception. "The most important aspect of our relationship that went into the wedding was our mutual love of music," Heidi says. "We selected all of our ceremony and reception music, including my favorite original song by Sam, that he once wrote for me." The couple celebrated their marriage at the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks, MI where guests danced the night away to the custom playlist. The outdoor, nature-inspired ceremony and the rustic, eclectic styled reception coupled to make the perfect combination for their special day.

Yellow and Orange Succulent and Ranunculus Bouquet
The flower arrangements were just one of that Heidi's DIY components of the wedding. The bouquets consisted of a variety of flowers including ranunculus, dahlias and crispedias.
Heidi and Sam's guests received a free-day pass to explore the gardens after the ceremony. "Fernwood is definitely a hidden gem in the Michigan area," Heidi says.

Heidi and Sam Wedding Day
Heidi and Sam selected their own ceremony and reception music to accompany their personal styles and equal love of music.
"The Sapphire’s color, orange, is my favorite color," explains Heidi. "My birthday is Halloween, so I really enjoyed that the ring had orange and black colors."
"I love that there is no other dress like mine, and the back of the dress ended up being my favorite part," Heidi said after having the back of her dress custom-made just for her.
