Courtney McGrew (24 and a science teacher) and Austin Miller (25 and a firefighter and paramedic) met for in the sixth grade, when they played a neighborhood game of Jailbreak. “He was so cute back then,” Courtney says. The two reconnected in high school, when Austin asked Courtney out. The timing wasn’t quite right, says Courtney, who admits she “wasn’t ready for a serious relationship.” She was ready in college, and the two dated for nearly a year before Austin broke it off. “I thought he was the one even back then, so I was devastated,” she says. A few years later, they reunited. “It may have taken us a few tries and some major heartache, but it was so worth it,” she says. “What’s meant to be will find its way.” They were married at Austin's childhood church, then moved to nearby Dorral Farm in Marysville, Ohio, for the reception, a “classy, rustic venue, without being too country,” Courtney says. They incorporated ample greenery, lavender roses, silver dollar eucalyptus and purple hues for an ethereal, romantic garden feel. “When I imagine being in a fairy tale, I imagine purple roses.” Her fairy tale was complete with a vintage Volkswagen bus photo booth, a homemade lemonade stand and family members helping with nearly every element of the wedding. Family contributions helped make the celebration “that much more special,” Courtney says. “It’s cool to look back on those personal details.” Her advice to future couples is to never give up on each other. “Choose to deliberately love each other every single day, even when times get hard. It’s worth it in the end.” —Chrissy Sorenson

Courtney created the wedding invitations, RSVP cards, programs and seating assignments. "We love DIY projects, so I did as many things ourselves as possible," Courtney says.
When dress shopping, Courtney looked for a figure-flattering classic style. “The Amy Kuschel dress I chose was just that, and it fit me like a glove.” The couture gown was light and elegant, with a sweetheart neckline, a natural waistline, a flowing sheath silhouette and a detailed hemline.
For the church ceremony, Courtney wore a long-sleeve lace bolero with delicate buttons down the back over her gown. “I think that’s what made my dress perfect for me,” she says.
Courtney added a lace cover overtop and sparkly belt to her couture gown.
“The black-and-white tux is so timeless,” Courtney says. “It really looks good on everyone.”
The bridesmaids wore floor-length lavender gowns in styles that complemented their figures.
Courtney wanted a lot of greenery and lavender roses in her bouquet. Roses, silver dollar eucalyptus and other lavender hues created an ethereal, romantic garden feel. “When I imagine being in a fairy tale, I imagine purple roses,” Courtney says.
The ceremony was at Austin’s childhood church, in the small town where they both grew up. The decor was minimal, with an emphasis on the cross at the center of the stage. Their florist created a swag of greenery embellished with lavender roses. The flower girls threw silver dollar eucalyptus down the aisle. The processional song was “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen, and the recessional song was “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay.

A few years after Courtney and Austin broke up, Courtney found old love letters in a drawer in her parents' kitchen—love letters she thought she had thrown out immediately after the breakup. It turns out Courtney's mom had retrieved them from the trash without Courtney knowing, "because she had a feeling in her heart we would get back together someday," Courtney says. "I was so mad at her that I didn't talk to her for at least a week. Little did she know we would get back together and get married."
The mother of the groom salvaged a vintage barn door from a barn that had been torn down and created a rustic yet elegant “welcome” sign for the reception at Dorral Farm in Marysville, Ohio.
Long farm tables were fancied up with greenery, glassware and candles.
Courtney and Austin’s first-dance song was “All of Me” by John Legend, a song that Austin says is “exactly” how he feels about Courtney.
Succulents in mini white pails were handed out as favors.
A vintage Volkswagen bus was available for photo booth-style photos. A box of props sat on a table outside the door.
