Kim Maul (32, a digital marketer) and Michael Green (29, a web developer) met several times at happy hours organized by mutual friends, but it wasn’t until one happy hour around the holidays that the two hit it off. After that night, Kim and Michael discovered that they lived in the same neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York and decided to meet up for their first date. They dated for the next two years, and one night they were going out for a nice dinner to celebrate Michael’s birthday. The couple had to leave early when Kim got a text from her friend that had been stood up, but when they showed up at the bar, all their friends were there. A confused Kim thought it was for Michael’s birthday, but then realized Michael was down on one ring asking for her hand in marriage. The couple had their wedding at Pleasant Valley Farm in Kim’s hometown of Mansfield, Ohio that was owned by family friend. The property had a huge lake, a beautiful red barn and a large field where their wedding ceremony took place. Kim carried a bouquet down the aisle that included succulents, pink dahlias, lavender and blue lisianthus, among other flowers. After having their ceremony in the open field with guests surrounding them, the party was moved inside the red barn for the reception. Napkins, table runners and even a backdrop custom-made by the bride and groom added touches of blue inside the rustic venue. Lights were strung from exposed wooden beams, hanging over the long white dining tables and circular sweetheart table. As the celebration continued and the sky got dark, the lights light up all around the interior and exterior of the barn, creating a magical sight that kept the party going.

“For the bouquets, I wanted more of a wild look,” says Kim. “We had lots of greenery, including succulents mixed in with pink dahlias, lavender lisianthus, pink hypericum berries, and white stock for the bridesmaids. My bouquet also had blue delphinium and white lisianthus, getting another pop of blue.”rn

"My dress was the Marlowe gown from J.Crew, and Michael wore a charcoal grey suit from J. Crew,” says Kim. “Blue has always been my favorite color.”
“I've never been a fan of "everyone in the same dress and suit" look,” says Kim. “So my bridesmaids each picked a blue dress, whatever kind of dress they wanted, and coordinated so they all had different shades of blue. The groomsmen did the same, but with grey suits. They each picked a different blue tie/pocket square combo and, unbeknownst to me, wore fun socks that day too.”

“I kept the blue theme going, with light blue table runners and royal blue napkins, and we hand made a backdrop with various shades of blue for the dance floor,” says Kim.
“We wanted to bring a little NYC to this Ohio wedding, so for the seat assignments, we bought a bunch of NYC postcards and wrote each guest or couple a note, in addition to their table assignment,” says Kim. “It was a great way to do something a bit more personal for everyone.”rn

Bride and Groom First Dance in Barn
“My Dad and friends spent months cleaning up the barn and preparing the farm for a wedding, transforming it with twinkle lights and unique touches,” says Kim. “I guess you could say our wedding had a rustic feel, and was a bit of a trendy barn wedding. But for those who know us, it was just our kind of wedding.”
