A Rustic, Colorful Wedding at Hulls Cove School House in Bar Harbor, Maine

Ellen Hedefine (20 and a waitress) and Joshua Treurnich (22 and in earthquake strengthening) met while Ellen was on a working holiday visa in New Zealand. Josh had moved to New Zealand from South Africa when he was 11 years old. While out for drinks with a friend, Ellen met Josh and was not immediately smitten. A few months later, she decided to extend her stay in New Zealand and she ran into Josh once again. This time, however, she started to really like him. Three months went by and Ellen and Josh grew closer until she had to return to the United States. They continued their relationship long distance for seven months until Ellen returned with her family to meet Josh and his family. After a romantic dinner and walk on the beach, Josh explained how much he appreciated Ellen and proposed. Ellen grew up outside of Bar Harbor, ME and wanted to include Maine in the wedding somehow. With her love for old, rustic cottages, she decided to have the wedding at the Hulls Cove School House. "To me the venue is the foundation where your creativity can build from," she says. Their color palette was mint, light pink and light orange. "We wanted everything rustic, tree branches, wild flowers, wood and hay bales," Ellen says. Ellen originally wanted peonies in her bouquet but, with a July wedding, they were not available. Instead she incorporated white and pink hydrangeas, roses and greenery for her bouquet. With guests traveling from all over the world, Ellen wanted the guests to take away a piece of Maine from their wedding. Her aunt and uncle made gallons of maple syrup and bottled it for guests. "Josh and I worked endlessly on decorating the reception beautifully," Ellen says. "I think it really reflected our style and the things we appreciate in life."
