A Rustic, Bohemian Wedding at the Hydrangea Blu Barn in Rockford, Michigan

California-based couple Amy Peckins (31 and a photographer and teacher) and Jose Jimenez (29 and a public relations manager) relied heavily on DIY details and the creative efforts of family and friends to pull off a celebration that felt both rustic and elegant.

Amy and Jose were immediately drawn to the rustic barn’s understated aesthetic. “We loved the open, green space,” Amy says. “The barn doesn’t scream ‘wedding venue,’ which is exactly what we wanted.”

Amy carried a bouquet that included a purple artichoke, while her bridesmaids, in gold sequined dresses, held a single dinner plate dahlia. “The flowers were the most important detail for me,” Amy says. “I wanted free-flowing arrangements with a variety of color and texture.”

Fresh peaches, pomegranates and plums topped wood farm tables handmade by the father of the bride.

Shortly after Amy and Jose said “I do,” the newlyweds joined guests in an alfresco cocktail hour that included fare like pork torta sliders and peach and brie canapés. The couple also had a live mariachi band to honor Jose’s Mexican heritage. “Jose joined the band in singing a few songs,” Amy says. “It was definitely a surprise—everyone loved it!”

Escort cards took the form of lemon tree leaves penned with each guest’s name.

“Because we live in California, my parents helped so much with the planning,” Amy says of incorporating dozens of homemade details throughout their day. “My mom hunted down vintage furniture at yard sales in addition to making all of the table runners and wreaths.”
