A Romantic and Modern Wedding at The Bride and The Bauer in Kansas City, Missouri
Alana Rock and Clair Henderson had a classic wedding with touches of modernity. "For the most part, our wedding was traditional, but we also wanted our queerness to shine through," Clair says. At the loft-style ceremony site, gold chiavari chairs were topped with eucalyptus greenery and pink flowers. The couple stood behind a wall of white flowers at the altar, and they were flanked by their mixed-gender wedding party, who dressed in formal attire. Clair and Alana participated in a traditional hand-tying ceremony and a series of vows. "Our officiant wrote a queer blessing that allowed for our queer guests, our chosen family, to raise their heads and show their support of our marriage," Clair says. The entire party also cut a rug to the sounds of Taylor Swift, Björk and Janelle Monáe. At the reception, guests sat at round tables with light-colored linens and string lights hung overhead to create an ambient atmosphere. "The Bauer (our wedding venue) is rugged but can be polished too," Clair says. "It's a mix of both our personalities." Other memorable touches included a custom black napkin hand-stitched by Alana's mom, a blue hand-painted wedding cake and a colorful streamer exit.
