A Multicultural Desert Wedding at a Private Residence in Pioneertown, California

Hiking and camping are two of Kelly Field (28 and a teacher) and Edward Won's (27 and a field engineer) favorite ways to spend time together. One of their favorite places to hike is Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California, so it was an easy choice for the setting of their wedding day. "Our wedding was all about being in the desert—it's a beautiful place, and we didn't want any decorations or colors to overpower the palette of our venue," Kelly says. "We worked with soft greens and pink colors that would naturally be found in this location." The couple were married in a nonreligious ceremony, and Kelly surprised Edward and his family by saying her vows in Korean—a nod to his heritage. At the start of the reception, each changed into a traditional Korean wedding outfit, called a hanbok, and Eddie’s mother, aunt and grandmother tossed dates and chestnuts into Kelly’s hanbok as part of the Korean pyebaek tradition, which symbolizes good luck to their future children. She caught 9! Advice from Kelly: "Focus on the feeling you want to create on your big day, and let that guide your wedding planning." —Meghan Overdeep
