Tropical Details Filled This Berry-and-Black Wedding at The Joinery in Chicago, Illinois
Ashley Park and David and met at a mutual friend’s when David was visiting from Shanghai, so it made sense that they eventually return to tie the knot in the same neighborhood where their relationship began. “We knew our venue was ‘the one’ the moment we walked into the space,” Ashley says. “It was beautiful, bright and airy—it left lots of room for creativity.” The pair covered the restored woodworking shop in tropical plants and motifs, from large banana leaves to a tiger cake topper, giving guests a glimpse of their version of paradise. Towering tropical arrangements paired with black and gold tabletop details for a chic and edgy look. Monstera and banana leaves, roses, king proteas and orchids were among the varietals that made an appearance in the day’s tropical-meets-modern floral look. Modern ghost chairs and black table runners lined the reception tables, while antique peacock chairs made a statement at the sweetheart table. “I have an affinity for vintage furniture and design juxtaposition,” Ashley says.
Ashley added a sentimental touch to her sleek custom-made tulle dress with her grandmother’s pearl ring, while David dressed down his sharp tux by unbuttoning his shirt and opting out of socks and a tie. Since the couple couldn’t narrow down their list of pals, they decided to forgo a wedding party. “We just had a room full of friends wearing whatever wedding attire they felt comfortable in,” David says.
The duo named their signature cocktail after their pup so she could celebrate with them in spirit. A tiger bride and groom and an assortment of vivacious flowers garnished the semi-naked cake.
