A Modern, Minimal Kansas City Garden Wedding

Maggie Tennal (27 and an interior designer) and Chase Routon (31 and a realtor) didn’t realize that their modern, minimalist wedding vision would require maximal hours of planning, but they were up for the challenge. “Wedding planning felt like my first real design project,” Maggie says. “It was my way of showing what I can create.” The pair took road trips from Houston to Maggie’s hometown of KC for consultations, often cramming décor into their SUV, but there was a bright side: “We had some of our best conversations during those rides,” Maggie says. And now, they’re full-time KC residents.
Maggie carried a mix of ranunculus, peonies, roses and lisianthus in shades of sandy beige and soft pink.
Glass vases of bunny tails and pampas grass lined tables. “I knew I wanted all neutrals,” Maggie says. “The centerpieces were so light and airy.” The pair’s celebration had a hidden theme: prosecco. “The Fizzolino truck was one of the first vendors we booked—it was a hit,” Maggie says. “Both my dress and nail color were named Prosecco.” Guests paired their sips with games of cornhole and Connect 4 between the ceremony and reception.
Maggie and Chase marked their spot with a hanging floral installation that included pampas grass and roses repurposed from their ceremony arbor. At cocktail hour, guests grabbed snacks from an expansive charcuterie spread, following it up with a dinner of Texas and Kansas City barbecue. “The real hit was the four-cheese mac and cheese,” Maggie says. Gold flatware popped next to clean, white chargers and modern menus.
A 1957 Rolls-Royce greeted Maggie and Chase after their sparkler exit—bottle of bubbly included. “I loved sipping champagne in a cool car with my new husband on the best day ever,” Maggie says.
