A Modern Black-Tie Wedding at Amin Casa in Palm Springs, California

Inspired by 1960s mod style, Jessica Johnson and Brian Olds planned a modern black-tie wedding with clean lines, sleek acrylic accents and a black, white and gray color palette for their spring wedding in Palm Springs. “Our venue happened to be Gloria Swanson’s former home, which was revamped as a beautiful boutique hotel named Amin Casa,” Jessica says. “Rumor has it she used to host parties there that the likes of Frank Sinatra and others would attend.” Playing off the setting’s swanky past, flutes of champagne were served to guests as they arrived on-site. For the ceremony, Jessica and Brian created their contemporary chapel with sleek white tile, ghost chairs and an arc of white roses, peonies, orchids and hydrangeas arranged in the shape of an “O”—symbolic of their new shared last name. Dinner and drinks to took place poolside in the backyard. Round tables set with silver linens, beaded chargers and white orchid centerpieces dotted the intimate outdoor space. The newlyweds' cake—a bold, four-tier confection with black fondant, gold foil and white sugar flowers—was the focal point of the reception décor. After dinner, Jessica and Brian whisked guests off to a bar down the street for a lively after-party. As for their wedding day duds, the couple ditched tradition in favor of pieces that put their personalities on show. Brian jazzed up his tuxedo with a blue dot jacket and black suede shoes. “It was classy, but had a little bit of pizzazz and felt like something Frank Sinatra would wear back in the day, maybe even to a Gloria Swanson party,” Brian says. For her down-the-aisle look, Jessica opted for a blush Inbal Dror mermaid gown with a corseted bodice and intricate white floral paillettes and crystal embellishments. For an extra-personal touch, the bride accessorized with an 18-karat yellow gold and pink tourmaline necklace that she designed herself.
