A Laid-Back, Tropical Wedding at Grass Room in Los Angeles
Andrea Ryken and Travis Barnes tied the knot at Grass Room in Los Angeles—the newest wedding venue from Marvimon Productions. “As soon as we saw the interior (which was under construction) we had visions of the Wes Anderson film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou,” Andrea says. “This ultimately inspired the overarching feeling we wanted to conjure with our wedding—something fun and not taking itself too seriously.” To decorate Grass Room, the couple relied on jewel tones, tropical décor pieces and urban details inspired by their New York life (they’ve lived in Brooklyn since 2014). They also saved money with DIY elements, including the centerpieces and bouquets, which came together with flowers from the Los Angeles Flower Mart. “The day before the wedding, members of the wedding party found cheap, cute terra-cotta planters and potted all of the plants. Then, staying up super late into the night, our friend pulled together gorgeous bouquets for me and my bridesmaids, and arrangements with the leftover flowers,” Andrea says. The bride wore a bohemian dress with fringe and a white underlay, while her bridesmaids wore long dresses in various colors. Andrea and Travis personalized their wedding with food and drink, including a vegetarian taco bar and three signature cocktails: the Still Dre (a Negroni variation), Mojitos Mo Problems (a mojito) and the Spicy Barnesarita (a spicy margarita).
Our favorite #MakeTradition Moment: “For dessert, we really didn’t want a big cake or anything formal, so we got ice cream sandwiches,” Andrea says. “They ended up being the perfect dessert for dancing, as evidenced by the number of ice cream sandwiches that made it into wedding pictures!”
