A Highly Personalized, Modern Wedding at Detroit Yacht Club in Detroit, Michigan

Danny and Vinnie aren’t afraid to change things up. “As a gay couple, we make our own rules,” Vinnie says. That meant upholding some traditions, including vows and a wedding party, but also a few innovations. To keep the wedding dark and eclectic, the pair designed their own paper goods in a variety of textures and transformed the historic Detroit Yacht Club with unexpected touches, hanging off-season tropical leaves as a “fun, quirky touch on a chilly day,” Vinnie says. The duo warmed up the Detroit Yacht Club ceremony with a rattan rug, which they saved as a keepsake. The couple also said “no” to wedding cake, covering the dessert table in 800 cookies. “Make your wedding uniquely you,” Vinnie says. The pair swapped out classic greenery in favor of lush tropical leaves, scabiosa and anemones, going for something “wild with super-intense contrasting colors,” Vinnie says. The hand-carved table signs represented significant numbers in the couple’s lives, including 444, Vinnie’s grandma’s signature lipstick shade. The couple added a modern, moody touch to the space with a pink neon sign.
At the reception, Danny and Vinnie chose “Die With You,” “because Beyoncé, duh,” Vinnie says. Guests took home old-fashioned glass bottles of Shinola Cola, which Danny and Vinnie chose not only because of the iconic brand’s Detroit roots, but also as a sly tribute to Vinnie’s Machu Picchu proposal six months prior, during which he gifted Danny a classic Shinola watch.
