A Glam Roaring Twenties Wedding at Westwood Country Club in Austin, Texas
For their late-fall wedding, Ken Sharples (56 and a designer and consultant) and Pat Soffner (55 and a business analyst) pulled off a glamorous roaring twenties-inspired soiree that would make Jay Gatsby envious. A seasoned event designer with A-list clientele, Ken left no detail overlooked. “Pat is the love of my life. I wanted our wedding to be perfection—every detail you could imagine, right down to the fireworks and a green light illuminating Lake Austin, just like in 'The Great Gatsby,' ” Ken says. The festivities got under way at Westwood Country Club in Austin, Texas, a landmark filled with old-world flair. The ceremony took place before a striking stone fireplace in the Stone Room, where mosaic floors and a hand-carved ceiling infused the affair with undeniable Gatsby glamour. White taper candles displayed in tall candelabras cast a warm glow over opulent space, while the Sharples family's coat of arms added a note of masculinity to the decor. A close friend (who happened to introduce the pair) officiated, giving the proceedings a highly personalized feel. After saying “I do” and a quick costume change (complete with slick wigs to mirror the fashion of the day), Ken and Pat ushered guests outdoors to the pool for an alfresco blowout bash. “We chose the pool area because of the initial party scene in 'The Great Gatsby' movie,” Ken says. “That’s how we wanted to celebrate our reception.” Dancers decked out in 1920s duds joined the couple as they made their reception debut and a firework display signaled the start to the evening’s celebrations. Dressed in flapper dresses and tails, guests sipped on martinis and champagne while period music played in the background. Dinner was served under the stars, where guests gathered around tables adorned with candelabras dripping in garlands of shimmering crystals and bouquets of blue hydrangeas arranged atop glam beaded swags. Vintage crystal stemware, gold cutlery and beaded glass chargers added to the evening’s swanky old-world feel. After a meal of era-inspired eats, Ken and Pat treated guests to a Venetian room filled with decadent bite-size eats. Live music and performances from a 1920s-inspired dance troupe and a drag queen kept guests laughing and dancing all night. —Libby MacCarthy
