A Gatsby-Inspired Art Deco Wedding at the Gardens of Bammel Lane in Houston, Texas

Inspired by the Roaring Twenties, everything about Andrea Hersey’s (29 and an engineering manager) and Matthew Rowe’s (27 and a landman) wedding felt like a lavish party at the Gatsby mansion. The details of their glamorous soiree, from the decor to the stationery and even the dress code, were influenced by the art deco era, which mimicked the elegance and extravagance portrayed in 'The Great Gatsby' book and feature film. The glass conservatory at the Gardens of Bammel Lane in Houston, Texas, set the stage for the heartfelt ceremony, where Andrea walked down the aisle to a song from the Gatsby soundtrack, “Young and Beautiful” by Lana del Rey. After she and Matthew exchanged their own vows, guests partied outside while the venue was flipped for dinner, transforming the night into a chic celebration under a canopy of string lights. Andrea and Matthew decorated the space with vintage art deco pieces, including many family heirlooms and F. Scott Fitzgerald quotes. They even had a classic champagne tower and a 1920s getaway car. Their Jazz Age party had one big modern twist: Susie’s Cakes made a massive three-tier square wedding cake with a bold black and gold geometric pattern. Lauren at Bourbon and Lace Events helped Andrea and Matthew pull off all the details, and Alicia Pyne Photography was on hand to capture it all. Andrea asked her bridesmaids to find Gatsby-like dresses, and they all came together seamlessly. Each bridesmaid selected her own art deco-inspired accessories and hair and makeup style, each one different from the next. Andrea’s mother made DIY vintage brooch bouquets for their walk down the aisle.

Continuing the theme, the sound track from the most recent 'Great Gatsby' movie played throughout the ceremony. Andrea and Matthew recessed to “Where the Wind Blows” by Coco O. Additionally, they combined three sound track songs (“Crazy In Love,” “Bang Bang” and “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody”) for their first dance.
Andrea and Matthew designed their ceremony altar at the Gardens at Bammel Lane in Houston, Texas, to look like the scene from the recent "Great Gatsby" movie where Nick Carraway introduces Daisy Buchanan to the story in a room full of light with white drapes floating in the wind. Key details were re-created, such as a chandelier, a vintage mantel and curtains.
Glam Art Deco Wedding Party
During cocktail hour, guests mingled outside listening to 1920s swing music while snacking at the popcorn bar or making s’mores. The cocktail tables had large martini vases draped with pearls and were covered in gold and white chevron sequin tablecloths. Andrea made marquee lights to add vintage glam to the space.

The dining tables, covered in gold sequin tablecloths, boasted Eiffel Tower vase centerpieces containing bursting white feathers and hanging crystals atop a round mirror scattered with black diamond accents. Vintage frames held photos from Andrea and Matthew’s Gatsby-style engagement photo shoot.
Andrea and Matthew selected stationery with the black and gold design straight out of "The Great Gatsby." Dinner was a buffet of barbecue, which they knew would be a hit for their Texas wedding. The dishes had Jazz Age-inspired names such as Gatsby Green Beans, Prohibition Potato Salad and Ford Model Tea to name a few.

The wedding cake display was a standout detail at Andrea and Matthew’s reception. The light and delicious butter cake had three square tiers covered in white buttercream with black and gold art deco fondant triangles over a light and delicious. In front of the cake, Andrea and Matthew displayed their initials in black and gold.
In keeping with the art deco theme, Andrea wore her hair down with old-Hollywood glamour waves pinned to the side, and styled her makeup with dark eyes and bold lips. She also wore an ivory cap veil, which she drew from 1920s-era style, and wore all vintage heirloom jewelry.
Andrea and Matthew made their grand exit through a tunnel of sparklers and hopped into a vintage white 1920s Rolls-Royce exit car.
