A Fresh, Modern Wedding at Millwick in Los Angeles
Because LGBTQ+ marriage is illegal in Singapore, Marcia Ong and Sarah Benjamin went for a colorful destination wedding at Millwick. "When we settled on getting married in Los Angeles, we wanted to bring the bold colors of Palm Springs to downtown LA, so that really informed the color palette," the couple says. "Mainly, we wanted the wedding to feel really fresh, fun and modern, so we stayed away from the traditional whites and pastels and went straight for strong primary colors"—including reds, yellows, blues and pops of pinks. Because the venue had plenty of natural greenery, the couple chose a few simple flower arrangements in vibrant colors. They also decorated the reception tables with bright décor pieces, including pink table runners, blue chargers and color-blocked menus, table numbers and signage. Sarah decided on a nontraditional long-sleeve pink dress made of two different laces, while Marcia wore a custom blue suit.
Our favorite #MakeTradition Moment: "We're both Singaporean with Chinese heritage, but being queer, we didn't feel obliged to stick to many of our cultural traditions," the brides say. "The one thing we 'brought over' from Singapore was the 'yamseng' toast, where a friend shouts out three different blessings, and the whole crowd has to shout 'yaaaaamseng,' holding it as long as they can, to signify a long and happy marriage. And at the end of that, you get to drink!"
