A Fairy Tale-Inspired Wedding at Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City, Utah

Jane Ho (24 and a business analyst) and Jared Balaich (22 and a Ph.D. student) got engaged after a romantic date night watching “The Princess Bride” under the stars in Provo Canyon. Since Jared proposed after watching a fairy tale movie, and because the couple loves watching “Once Upon a Time” together, their wedding had a fairy tale theme with the colors of purple, gold and cream. The couple knew they wanted an elegant, timeless ceremony at the Salt Lake Temple of the LDS Church, and selected the Joseph Smith Memorial Building on Temple Square for their reception. They held a ring ceremony in the stately, elegant Empire Room with a deep red and rich golden brown atmosphere for those who could not attend the temple ceremony. The reception moved to the Wasatch Room on the 10th floor, which the couple loved for its dramatic views of Temple Square and the Wasatch Mountains and the light purple and golden decor to match Jane’s chosen color palette. Many of the couple’s reception decorations hunted at a spring fairy tale and included butterflies, flowers, lanterns and whimsical shapes and patterns. For a fun guest activity, Jane created a wedding day mad lib that acted as the guest book so that the couple’s friends and family could have a laugh. “Our wedding mad libs were quite humorous, and we felt it was a great way for our guests to have some good jokes at our expense, because we are a very goofy couple who loves joking around,” says Jane.
