A DIY Wedding at the Martin and Mason Hotel in Deadwood, South Dakota

After a mutual friend convinced Justine (22 and a cake decorator) and Brock (23 and a chemical engineer) to go out of a blind date, the two immediately fell into sync -- getting engaged just a year later. To celebrate their special day, the two settled on the historic Mason & Martin Hotel in Deadwood as both the ceremony and reception space. "This venue was my absolute dream," Justine says. "My family owns a cake bakery in Rapid City, so we have delivered to most venues around the area and see the best of the best. When we first delivered to the venue, I told my mom that it was my future wedding site." The antique decor and grandeur of the hotel's ballroom was enough in itself, so the bride enlisted her own mother to add the finishing touches to the space. The rustic wood altar was handmade by Justine's father from branches on his property, while the centerpieces were created using natural slabs of slate also from family land. Rustic, homemade elements aside, the most impressive aspect of the ballroom wedding was the bride's choice to serve 23 homemade cakes to family and friends. "My personal favorite was our wedding cakes...many cakes," Justine says. "I decorated all 23 myself so guests at each table could serve themselves." But the bride didn't stop there. "My husband wanted an orate cake, but I refused since I wanted it to be teal," she explains. "To surprise him, I secretly dyed the top tier of our cake orange. He was so happy!"
