A DIY Southern Style Wedding at the Manor House in Richmond, Virginia

Heather Matsey (25 and a marketing manager) and Mark Lewis (30 and a chef) met at a local bar called “Ipanema” in Richmond, Virginia. Mark was smiling from ear to ear, and by the time they finished their conversation, so was Heather. A month later, they ran into each other again at the same bar. Heather was embarrassed because she forgot Mark’s name when he remembered hers. When she found out that he was six years older than her, she cracked jokes about his age. On their first date, they went to see Paranormal Activity. A few days later, when Heather was sick, Mark offered to bring her butternut squash soup. Three years later, after a post-brunch stroll through the park with their yorkie, Mark proposed to Heather in front of the James River. The couple was married at the quaint, southern style Manor House at King’s Charter. The ceremony took place in the front garden of the historical house, under a large Osage Tree. The wedding took place in the spring so the flowers would be in full bloom. The theme of the wedding was “Love Birds,” inspired by the Robin Thicke song. “We focused on DIY decorations,” says Heather. “I wanted to cut costs as much as possible, so I collected a lot of items at thrift stores and handmade a lot of our decorations.” The color pallette incorporated tones of cream and coral with accents of gold and pale green. This coral DIY wedding had all the elements of Southern charm and hospitality.

The bride wore a trumpet style dress from David's Bridal with straps, ruching and a tulle bow in the back. She paired her wedding dress with a long, sheer veil and carried a bouquet of peach and white roses.
"Our flowers were a perfect combination of soft peach, cream and coral," says Heather. "We used white hydrangeas, Queen Anne's lace, baby's breath, astilbe, hypercium berries, peach garden roses and peonies."

"We got married in front of the large, osage trees on the front lawn of the Manor House," says Heather. "We wanted to have a spring wedding, so the flowers would be in full bloom."

The centerpieces consisted of simple white vases that held various combinations of peach roses, peonies, hydrangeas and baby's breath. Chalkboard signs throughout the reception hall displayed some of the couple's favorite quotes.
Coral Print Cards as a Guestbook
The "Love Bird" theme was based on the newlyweds' song, "2 Luv Birds" by Robin Thicke.
The tables in the reception hall were covered with tablecloths made out of burlap sacks and lace runners. Chalkboard signs marked the guests' table assignments.
The "Sweet Treats" dessert table included a chocolate caramel cake, a chocolate ganache pie and a traditional apple pie in addition to the wedding cake. "I wanted to have a little something for everyone and it made for such pretty pictures," says Heather.
The three tiered ivory wedding cake had two flavors of cake, hummingbird (a combination of banana nut and pineapple) and almond apricot. The cake topper matched the wedding's "Love Bird" theme.
The homemade wedding favors were small packages of organic trail mix in lace embellished bags with bird cage labels.
