A DIY Backyard Wedding in Lexington, Virginia
Accacia Mullen (24 and a reference librarian) and Grigg Mullen (31 and a machinist) met when Grigg came to the library looking for a book. They became engaged on a very cold winter hike, when Grigg gave Accacia the engagement ring that his great-grandmother was given in 1924. The couple wanted to get married somewhere unique that reflected the beauty of the area where they live. Their ceremony took place at a cabin up the hill from Grigg’s parent’s house, and the reception outside at their place. The backyard wedding was full of sentimental DIY details from top to bottom. The timber framed structure the couple got married under was built by the groomsmen, and the wedding party wore clothing made by the bride and her mother. Accacia’s mother also made fabric flower bouquet and helped Accacia make her own wedding dress. A lot of work was put into their wedding day by the couple, their parents, their brothers and their friends. The wedding included lots of colors everywhere, from the red in the bow ties to the green, blue and orange invitations. A theme of four-leaf clovers ran through everything; when the couple first started dating, Grigg taught Accacia how to find four-leaf clovers, and it’s been their thing ever since. A four-leaf clover contest rounded off the wedding day activities, with the prize being a belt and buckle that Grigg made.
